A National Historic Landmark in Oceanside

Located at 4050 Mission Avenue, the Mission San Luis Rey dates back to 1798 when it was founded by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuén. It’s frequently referred to as the King of the Missions thanks to its title as the largest of all the missions found throughout the state of California. The mission was named for King St. Louis IX of France who ruled during the 13th century. Over time the mission has been utilized in several different capacities. The mission has been used as a faith and instructional center as well as an operational base by the U.S. military between 1847 and 1857. The Mission San Luis Rey was restored between 1892 and 1912 by Fr. Joseph Jeremiah O’Keefe. He worked to rebuild permanent living quarters as well as repair original architecture to its original glory.
